While Rinjani is a challenging hike, Gus and his team made it feel 50% easier! From the moment we arrived at his incredible homestay, we felt so welcomed and taken care of. His wife cooked us some of the most delicious food we had in Indonesia.

During the trek, Juna was absolutely amazing. His timing was always spot on, he knew exactly when we needed a break and he supported us all the way to the summit. His experience made such a huge difference, especially during the toughest part of the climb.

The porters (Katut and Mangun) were also incredibly kind and hardworking. They were always smiling and laughing, and managed to secure the best camping spots every time! The food they prepared throughout the trek was delicious and kept us well-fueled.

We could not have asked for a better experience! Rinjani is tough, but with Gus and his team, it became the absolute highlight of our trip.

Un immense merci pour cette belle expérience avec Gus et son équipe. Organisation parfaite (timing et localisation du campement 🏕️). Les repas étaient excellents et très complets. They truly went above and beyond for us - from bringing fresh coffee to the summit, to hosting us in his home, to arranging all our transport, finding the best camping spots… the list goes on! Wish there was a 6th star… What an incredible experience on Mt Rinjani with Gus and his team! They went above and beyond at each step of the journey to make sure we experienced the best the trek has to offer.

Starting from the pre trek comms and logistics, Gus runs a very smooth operation: quickly responsive, accommodating to requests, and answering all our questions. We ended up staying the night before in his guest house. We were warmly welcomed by Gus, his family, and the two porters who would join us the next day. Right from the start it was all smiles and high spirits.

What made the trek with Gus stand out amongst all the other guides and groups we saw was his consistency, kind heart, and attention to detail. When Gus tells you there are about 1h20 minutes left, there are indeed 1h20 minutes left. When our first night turned out to be very windy, he ensured our camp was set up in a place that blocked us from the worst gusts. By the end of the first day we were even asking for bush recommendations. As Gus says « it’s like my second home, » and by the way he knows the trails by heart and greets nearly every other guide or porter, it shows. He might just be the most well known guy on Mt Rinjani. On the sunrise summit day we had some of the toughest conditions of the season. Gusts of winds made our climb slow, occasionally stumbling, and definitely nerve racking. But Gus was as calm as ever and we trusted him completely. We took breaks when necessary to shelter from the wind and made it to the summit in time for sunrise as promised. Nothing beats the chills we felt coming over the final ridge knowing we had done it. At the top we realised not more than a third of those who set out got there in time for sunrise due to the harsh conditions. All credit to Gus and his team for getting us up, well fed, mentally strong, keeping us safe, and not once suggesting we turn back. On our little three day adventure we made friends with another guided group. Being the well connected man he is, Gus even arranged to have our camps set close by so we could eat together and have a little friendly race to the bottom on the last day. If you think you’re a fast downhill hiker, I’d like to hear how you stack up against Gus. We easily made it to the bottom first with him in the lead :)

The experience of a lifetime to say the least.
